What Are the Origins of Idols, Deities, Oracles and Spirits?
I want to understand the origins of idols, deities, oracles, ancestral spirits and spirit mediums. Traditional worshippers often say they believe in Olodumare, whom they regard as the Almighty God, and that they approach Him through oriṣa and other spiritual beings. From a Christian perspective, Revelation 12 describes Satan and other fallen angels being cast out of heaven. Some people believe these spirits took residence in rivers, forests, trees, the air and other places. Others connect spirits to the Genesis account of the Nephilim and believe their spirits wandered the earth after the flood. We also hear traditional accounts of hunters encountering spirits in the forest and entering into agreements with them. Some stories say people such as Ogun, Sango and Osun later became objects of worship. However, these beliefs differ across communities and religions. In my view, I do not believe these deities and oracles are messengers of God. I wonder whether they are fallen angels or rebellious spirits instead, regardless of any benefits their worshippers claim to receive. What do you think?
