The Quiet Struggles of an Unemployed Man in His 30s
I sit by my bed and think about the hardships and uncertainty of life. I am in my 30s, yet I have cried more in recent years than I ever did as a child. The weight of trying to survive without anyone to fall back on can be overwhelming. Recently, I heard about a walk-in interview and rushed to attend. I had no money, so I borrowed ₦700 after begging at a nearby shop. I skipped food, boarded a bus, and arrived hopeful, only to learn that the interviews had ended. I waited, but the interviewers had already left, including the friend who invited me. I walked home shaken and defeated. My friend got the job, and I am genuinely happy for him because he has a family to care for. Still, my own journey feels lonely. I am ambitious and determined not to turn to crime or other harmful choices, but unemployment, hunger, and unfulfilled goals have made me feel older than my age. Even when thoughts of giving up come, I hold on to hope and keep trying.
