Navy Opens Dayspring Outpost After Kidnappings on Calabar-Oron Waterway

Kidnappings and militant attacks have made parts of Cross River’s waterways unsafe for coastal residents, fishermen, traders and commuters. At least 52 passengers were reportedly abducted in three incidents on the Calabar-Oron water channel between April 2025 and April 2026, including students travelling for UTME. The Nigerian Navy says it has intensified intelligence-led patrols and raids to disrupt criminal networks. In May 2026, it established a forward security outpost at Dayspring Island to strengthen surveillance and response along the vulnerable route. Security officials say lasting safety will require regular patrols, credible intelligence from coastal communities, stronger coordination among agencies and better infrastructure. Residents say secure waterways are essential for fishing, trade, travel and access to basic services.
