Venezuelan Inmates Seize Prison Roof in Protest Against Torture
Inmates at the Barinas Judicial Detention Centre in Venezuela took control of the prison roof to protest alleged torture and killings. They set fire to mattresses and sheets and held up “SOS” banners as hundreds chanted “No more torture.” A video shared by a local prison NGO shows prisoners demanding the removal of the newly appointed director. They accuse guards of shooting unarmed inmates and banning visits. One man is seen with a bullet wound in his chest. Outside the facility, family members clashed with National Guard officers as they tried to enter. The NGO says it is documenting events and reporting them to human rights watchdogs.
