Nigeria’s ₦9 Trillion Tourism Question: Why Do We Holiday Abroad?
Nigeria spends huge sums on foreign travel each year, while many local attractions remain underused. From Idanre Hills and Yankari Game Reserve to Obudu Mountain Resort and the Lekki Conservation Centre, the country has destinations that deserve greater attention. Redirecting even part of this spending to local tourism could support hotels, transport operators, food vendors, tour guides and small businesses. It could also create jobs and encourage investment in infrastructure, safety and destination management. Nigeria has natural sites such as Ikogosi Warm Spring and Agbokim Waterfalls, alongside rich history and diverse cultures. The challenge is to make domestic travel safer, easier and more attractive for Nigerians.
