Queer Women Left Behind: The Urgent Need for Inclusive Feminism in Nigeria

Queer Women Left Behind: The Urgent Need for Inclusive Feminism in Nigeria — 1 of 4

In August 2024, Abuja Area Mama, a transgender activist, was found murdered on the roadside in Abuja. Her brutal death and the circulation of graphic images exposed a horrifying reality: queer women in Nigeria face violence without protection or public outcry. Queer women — including lesbians, bisexual women, trans women, and gender non-conforming individuals — live at the intersection of gender and sexuality-based oppression. Their stories of brutal attacks, “corrective” violence, arbitrary arrests and mob raids often go ignored or dismissed. Nigeria’s Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act has enabled widespread abuse and impunity. A Human Rights Watch report reveals how the law fuels extortion, torture and denial of justice. BBC Africa Eye investigations also show how online blackmail schemes target queer Nigerians in digital spaces. True feminism must extend rights and protection to all who identify as women. This means creating inclusive programs, challenging bias and amplifying queer voices. Feminist movements that leave queer women behind fail their own mission of justice and equality.
