INEC Warns Insecurity Could Disenfranchise Voters in 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission has warned that insecurity could prevent eligible Nigerians from voting in the 2027 general elections. INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan raised the concern at a conference for senior police officers in Owerri, Imo State. He said INEC is working with the police, the Office of the National Security Adviser and other agencies on strategies for elections in volatile areas. The commission also plans to reconvene the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security to strengthen coordination nationwide. The presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for January 16, 2027, while governorship and state assembly polls will hold on February 6. INEC also identified funding, logistics, vote-buying, intelligence gathering and police neutrality as major issues that must be addressed for credible polls. Amupitan said INEC cannot arrest or investigate electoral offenders and called for stronger enforcement by relevant agencies. He urged adequate funding for both INEC and security bodies to protect voters and the integrity of the electoral process.
