Insecurity and Funding Gaps Threaten Bible Translation in Nigeria, NBTT Warns
The Nigeria Bible Translation Trust (NBTT) says insecurity, inadequate funding and a shortage of language experts are slowing Bible translation work across the country. Speaking at the organisation’s 50th anniversary in Jos, its executive director said some translators working in rural communities had been killed, while violence had displaced residents and disrupted projects. She called for stronger security protection for translators and language development workers. NBTT said Nigeria has more than 600 minority languages needing translation and language-development support. The organisation also urged churches, local institutions and young Nigerians to support the work, including through digital tools and artificial intelligence.
