Why Degrees and Skills Still Do Not Guarantee Jobs in Nigeria
For many Nigerians, graduation does not lead straight to employment. They may have degrees, certifications, internships and digital skills, yet spend months or years searching for a decent job. The problem is bigger than individual qualifications. Nigeria produces many graduates, but the economy does not create enough stable, high-skilled jobs to absorb them. Employers also demand experience and practical ability, while fresh graduates need their first job to gain that experience. High business costs, limited access to finance, unreliable infrastructure and opportunities concentrated in major cities make hiring and relocation difficult. Small businesses often cannot afford to employ professionals at scale. Graduates still need adaptable skills and practical experience. But universities, employers and government must also help create realistic entry-level pathways and an economy that produces sustainable jobs. A certificate can improve someone’s chances, but it cannot replace the jobs that are missing.
