Global Cancer Cases Could Rise 67% to 34 Million Annually by 2050, Report Warns

New estimates from the International Agency for Research on Cancer project that annual cancer cases could rise from 20.6 million in 2024 to 34 million by 2050. Annual deaths could also increase from 9.8 million to 17.5 million over the same period. The report links the projected increase to population ageing, tobacco use, infection-related cancers and unequal access to prevention, early diagnosis and treatment. It warns that many countries still lack reliable cancer incidence and mortality data. Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer death worldwide. Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in many countries, while prostate cancer is the leading diagnosis among men in 123 countries. In sub-Saharan Africa, breast and cervical cancers account for more than half of cancer cases among women.
