How Can Christians Embrace a Faith That Sanctioned Slavery and Oppressed Our Ancestors?
My question to Christians: did you know how brutally our forebears were taken from Africa? Over 12 million men, women and children were packed into ships like cargo. Many died of starvation or disease. Some were even thrown overboard so owners could claim insurance. Chained by neck, hands and feet, they were treated worse than animals. Forced breeding, family abuse and daily violence were common. Church leaders, including bishops and popes, also owned slaves. Yet the same Bible contains passages that endorse slavery. From Genesis to the New Testament, it instructs buying, selling and obeying slaves. How do we reconcile following a faith that once empowered this atrocity?
