Israel Marks Third Anniversary of October 7 Attack Amid Memorials and Protests
Israel has marked three years since the Hamas-led October 7, 2023 attack with moments of silence, memorials and public protests across the country. Ceremonies began at 6:29 a.m., the time gunmen breached border barriers during the attack. More than 1,200 people were killed and 251 people were taken hostage in the assault. At the Nova music festival site near Re’im, where hundreds were killed or abducted, survivors and victims’ families joined commemorations. Grassroots groups and families of victims used the anniversary to renew demands for an independent state inquiry into the intelligence and political failures surrounding the attack. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has resisted calls for such an inquiry, while opposition figures have made the issue central to criticism ahead of the October 27 election. The war in Gaza that followed has killed more than 74,000 Palestinians, according to health authorities in the territory.
