Can Nigeria Make Government Recruitment Fair and Transparent?
For many Nigerians seeking work, the challenge is not only finding a vacancy. It is trusting that every applicant will receive a fair chance. Federal public-service recruitment rules require vacancies to be advertised, qualified candidates to be shortlisted and successful applicants to be published. Yet applicants often receive little information about shortlisting, examination scores or why particular candidates were selected. A credible process should clearly state eligibility rules, deadlines and every stage of selection. Digital platforms can preserve application records, scores and shortlists, while a functioning complaints process should allow applicants to challenge irregularities. Federal character and merit must work together. Nigerians should be able to see that successful candidates met the stated requirements and that public jobs were awarded through a process that can be explained.
