Rivers Flood Victims Demand Lasting Solutions as Homes, Farms and Businesses Sink
Residents of Rivers State are calling for stronger flood prevention measures after the 2026 rainy season destroyed homes, farms, businesses and infrastructure across Port Harcourt, Obio/Akpor, Eleme, Oyigbo and Etche LGAs. Some families were displaced to churches, hotels, rented apartments and IDP camps, while at least one death was reported in Oyigbo. The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency had listed Rivers among high-risk flood states and warned of urban flooding in Port Harcourt, as well as coastal and riverine flooding. Residents and environmental experts say blocked drains, poor waste disposal, construction on floodplains and weak enforcement of planning rules have worsened the crisis. Affected residents say relief materials and financial support are necessary, but they want lasting action. They are urging authorities to clear waterways, maintain drainage systems, stop development on natural channels, improve early warnings and help vulnerable households relocate from flood-prone areas. The state and federal emergency agencies have distributed relief items, assessed affected communities and announced support for some victims. However, residents say the focus must shift from repeated emergency response to practical measures that protect lives and livelihoods before the next rainy season.
