Imo Victim Pleads for N5m Ransom as Forest Kidnappers’ Network Is Exposed
A viral video shows an injured man, identified as Chigbo Ohalem, begging his family for a N5 million ransom after being abducted in Agwa, Oguta LGA of Imo State. Other hostages reportedly appeared in the footage, reigniting fears over growing insecurity. Activist Harrison Gwamnishu revealed how forest-based gangs operate nationwide. He shared an account from a captured kidnapper who learned tactics in Nasarawa State before forming his own four-man ring and using multiple forest “offices” as hideouts. According to the suspect, ransom funds go toward acquiring AK-47 rifles, ammunition and even investing in cattle. He also admitted relying on market POS operators to launder payments so kidnappers avoid banks and large cash movements. Gwamnishu urged the government and security agencies to partner with financial operators to curb money laundering linked to these abductions. He warned that a widening disconnect between authorities and citizens is hampering vital intelligence sharing.
