Africa’s Richest Heads of State: Estimates and the Debate Around Their Wealth

King Mohammed VI of Morocco is often cited as Africa’s wealthiest head of state, with widely varying estimates of between $5.8 billion and $8.5 billion. His wealth is linked to royal holdings in banking, agriculture and telecommunications. Among presidents of republics, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is frequently listed among the wealthiest, with unverified estimates ranging from $4 billion to $7 billion. The claims commonly point to investments in real estate, oil and long-standing business networks. Other leaders often included in such rankings are Teodoro Obiang of Equatorial Guinea, Paul Kagame of Rwanda, William Ruto of Kenya and Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa. These figures should be treated cautiously, as political leaders’ assets are often not publicly declared and estimates may mix personal, family and state-linked holdings.
