Nigeria Records West Africa’s First Tele-Robotic Kidney Cancer Surgery

Nigeria has recorded what is being described as West Africa’s first tele-robotic surgery, with a surgeon operating remotely from Redeemer’s Health Village while the patient was treated at Nisa Premier Hospital in Abuja. The three-hour procedure removed a kidney affected by a cancerous tumour. The patient was reported to be in stable condition and expected to leave the hospital within 24 hours. The doctors said the successful operation shows the potential of remote robotic surgery to expand access to specialist care across Nigeria. A proposed robotic academy also plans to train at least 150 surgeons and medical professionals over the next two years.
