Taraba Explains Jalingo Airfares, Says More Airline Competition Is Needed
We acknowledge passengers’ concerns over airfares on the Jalingo–Abuja–Lagos routes. Ticket prices are shaped by demand, seat availability, booking time, aircraft capacity, operating costs and the level of competition on each route. Passengers on the same flight may pay different fares because airlines use dynamic pricing. Lower-priced seats are often sold early, while fares rise as seats become scarce and departure dates draw closer. Prices also tend to increase during festive periods, public holidays and school breaks. Jalingo faces additional operating challenges, including the lack of an aviation fuel depot at Danbaba Suntai Airport. Airlines may need to carry extra fuel for return trips, affecting payload and operating efficiency. The state says it is developing a fuel depot and improving airport infrastructure to attract more airlines, increase flight options and encourage more competitive fares. The government does not set ticket prices for private airlines. However, passengers deserve transparent pricing and value for their money, while airlines should be able to operate in an environment that supports sustainable service.
