African Unity in Crisis: Where Is the AU on South Africa’s Xenophobic Violence?
As xenophobic attacks force thousands of Africans to flee South Africa ahead of a June 30 deadline, the continent’s highest political body remains silent. Families are separated, businesses abandoned, and human dignity under threat. The African Union was established on principles of solidarity, peace, and protection for every African. Yet when citizens from Nigeria, Ghana, Malawi, Zimbabwe, and beyond are targeted, its response has been limited to statements and summits rather than urgent action. Where is the emergency meeting? Where is a united diplomatic effort? Should stronger measures, including suspensions or sanctions, be considered until South Africa guarantees safety for all Africans within its borders? African solidarity must go beyond slogans. The AU can still prove that every African life matters by speaking and acting decisively against violence and intimidation.
