BOFF’s Atrocities: Child Soldiers, Torture and Ethnic Violence
The Biafran Organization of Freedom Fighters (BOFF) was the special operations arm of the secessionist Biafran Armed Forces. Led by Colonel Ejike Obumneme Aghanya, it relied on sabotage, espionage and asymmetric warfare to challenge the Nigerian Army’s superior firepower. BOFF recruited children as young as ten for spying and frontline combat in its “Boys’ Company.” It ran detention centers in Calabar, Umuahia and Ikot Ekpene where detainees faced extreme torture, forced to drink urine, suffer electric shocks and endure executions. Elite units like the Bende Special Operations Group revived head-hunting traditions, decapitating victims for ritual purposes. Survivors recall mass shootings, ritual mutilations and widespread sexual violence, including rape of women and boys, aimed at terrorizing non-Igbo minorities. Igbo civilians often assisted BOFF operations, guiding combing exercises in minority villages and participating in public beatings and executions. These crimes against humanity sought to suppress dissent and secure control over territory and resources.
