A suspected serial killer named Akaninyene was arrested by Nigerian Army troops and a tactical special forces team in Ukim Ita, Odukpani LGA, Cross River State after intelligence linked him to a recent disappearance. Security operatives, joined by community youths and elders, searched his isolated forest hideout and uncovered eight shallow graves, each concealing about five headless bodies covered by plantain crops. Under interrogation, Akaninyene admitted to killing around 30 people over time and led officers to the burial sites. He revealed that his last attack on Tuesday, 26 May 2026, was carried out with the help of a woman who lured victims and held their heads. Local leaders and security agencies are now widening search operations to find other potential crime scenes. Residents are urged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity as investigations continue.
