Metuh Calls for Tougher Punishment for Fake Drug Producers After Abia Conviction
Olisa Metuh has called for tougher penalties for people who produce and distribute fake drugs and adulterated consumer products, saying a five-year prison term or ₦5 million fine is not enough. He reacted to the conviction of a businessman in Abia State for producing and distributing fake Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Metuh said light penalties could make counterfeiting a manageable cost for offenders despite the health risks to consumers. He urged the National Assembly to strengthen laws on counterfeit medicines and unsafe products, including longer prison terms, asset forfeiture, compensation for victims and the closure of offending facilities. A bill before the Senate proposes up to 15 years in prison, forfeiture of assets and stronger enforcement powers for NAFDAC.
