Beyond Goals and Assists: Are Fans Missing the Full Picture?
I think football fans should look beyond goals and assists when judging a player. If someone does not score or set up a goal, that does not automatically mean he had a poor game. It depends on his role on the pitch. A midfielder might break up attacks, cover for a full-back or help the team escape pressure. A striker can also create space for teammates with his movement, even without touching the ball. These contributions may not make the highlights, but they can still matter. That does not mean poor performances should be excused. Fans can criticise a striker who repeatedly misses clear chances. But it is worth judging the whole performance, including what a player does off the ball. Which player do you think gets unfair criticism because fans overlook that side of his game?
