How Nigeria’s Four Planned Satellites Could Strengthen Security, Farming and Disaster Response

Nigeria is pursuing four new satellites to improve Earth observation for border surveillance, agriculture, disaster response and environmental management. The programme includes three optical Earth-observation satellites and one Synthetic Aperture Radar satellite. Unlike conventional imaging systems, the radar satellite can capture data at night and through cloud cover. This could help agencies track flooding, land-use changes, farmland conditions and remote areas of security concern. The Federal Executive Council approved the programme in May 2025, while NASRDA said in March 2026 that it was advancing the satellites’ design, construction and launch under government procurement procedures. However, the satellites alone will not solve insecurity or agricultural challenges. Their value will depend on timely launch, skilled data analysis, coordination among agencies and government action on the intelligence gathered.
