Five Children Die From Diphtheria in Kano Family as Health Officials Urge Vaccination
Five children from one family in Danbare Ward, Layin Dutse, Kumbotso LGA of Kano State have died following a diphtheria outbreak, according to the Kano Centre for Disease Control. Health officials said six children in the household were linked to the infection. Five died after being taken to a health facility late, while a four-year-old survivor was treated and discharged after showing mild symptoms. The agency said three of the children who died had not received any routine immunisation doses. It urged parents and caregivers to complete missed vaccinations and seek medical care quickly for symptoms such as fever, sore throat, neck swelling, difficulty swallowing or breathing, and white patches in the throat. Diphtheria spreads through close contact and respiratory droplets, but it can be prevented with vaccination. Residents were also advised against relying on self-medication when children show unusual symptoms.
