Obasanjo: Western-Style Democracy Has Caged Africa
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo says he is increasingly worried about the state of democracy in Africa and other parts of the world. Speaking at the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation Democracy Dialogue 2026 in Bauchi, he argued that many African countries operate a Western liberal democratic model inherited from colonial rule rather than a system designed around African realities. Obasanjo said Africa should not deceive itself about having its own democratic model. He added that countries such as China and Switzerland may define and assess their political systems differently, citing China’s system and Switzerland’s direct-democracy tradition.
