FIFA Gives Nigeria Seven Days to Explain Gusau’s Exit, Warns of Suspension
FIFA has given the Nigeria Football Federation and the Federal Government seven days to explain the circumstances surrounding former NFF president Ibrahim Musa Gusau’s resignation. In a September 1, 2026 letter to the NFF and the National Sports Commission, FIFA said it was concerned by reports that the resignation followed a directive from the Presidency. The world football body warned that government interference in the removal of elected football officials could violate FIFA statutes. FIFA wants confirmation that Gusau resigned voluntarily, an official explanation from the Federal Government, and assurances that the NFF will continue to operate independently. Failure to satisfy the demands could put Nigeria at risk of suspension from FIFA and CAF competitions.
