Yobe Teaching Hospital Records First Total Hip Replacement Surgery

Yobe State University Teaching Hospital has performed its first total hip replacement surgery on a young man living with sickle cell disease. The patient developed avascular necrosis, a condition in which reduced blood supply causes bone tissue to die. Surgeons replaced the damaged hip joint with an artificial one during the procedure. Health officials said the specialised surgery was previously unavailable in Yobe State. The development follows another major procedure carried out at the state specialist hospital earlier this year.
