Boko Haram Fighters and Bandits Granted Housing and Aid Instead of Trial
Nigeria’s deepening security crisis stems from corruption, injustice, moral decline and a weakened value system. Violent groups from Boko Haram to armed bandits have wreaked havoc across regions for over a decade. Originally framed as a movement against western education, Boko Haram gained political backing from some northern elites. Their cause morphed into a broader insurgency and inspired other armed factions, including armed herders labelled as “bandits.” Instead of condemning these attacks, some politicians have called for amnesty and reintegration. Under the "Operation Safe Haven" initiative, arrested insurgents and bandits are released, housed and supported rather than tried and punished. This approach bypasses accountability and fuels further violence. Without rooting out corruption, restoring justice and adopting merit-based governance, more mass kidnappings and killings are likely to continue.
