Awka Diocese Chancellor Rejects Removal, Threatens ₦5 Billion Libel Suit
Mr Beluolisa Nwofor (SAN), Chancellor of the Anglican Diocese of Awka, has rejected a letter purporting to remove him from office and threatened a ₦5 billion libel suit against Bishop Samuel Ezeofor of Aguata Diocese. Nwofor argued that Bishop Ezeofor, appointed supervisory bishop after Archbishop Alexander Ibezim’s suspension, lacks the constitutional authority to appoint or remove the Awka Diocese chancellor. He also questioned the legal basis of the Office of the Supervising Bishop under the diocese’s 2023 constitution. He demanded withdrawal of the removal letter within 24 hours, a public apology within 48 hours and payment of ₦5 billion in damages within seven days. Nwofor maintained that his tenure remains valid and described the purported removal as null and void.
