Sheikh Abubakar Gumi Warns US Military Role Could Fuel Terror in Nigeria
Sheikh Abubakar Gumi has warned against any foreign military role in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism. He argued that involving the US or other powers would undermine sovereignty and could turn Nigeria into a hotspot for international extremist networks. The cleric stressed that the Nigerian military has never halted operations against Boko Haram or bandits—except during the Niger Delta amnesty—and blamed abuses against civilians for eroding public trust and prolonging the insurgency. He cited allegations that USAID once funded terror groups and questioned silence over a 1995 bombing in Kaduna. Gumi urged Nigerians to resist a “slave mentality” and support their own armed forces. His remarks follow the Defence Headquarters’ confirmation that a joint US-Nigerian operation killed ISIS commander Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, who was linked to the Dapchi schoolgirls kidnapping.
