A 26-year-old woman from Hackney was sentenced to six years in prison in Hong Kong after falsely accusing a banker of rape and demanding HK$100,000 to drop the claim. She met the man while travelling in Thailand and later flew to Hong Kong. After spending a night together on February 1, she filed a false report and then demanded money, first HK$5,000 and later HK$100,000, threatening to go to the police. Following a six-day trial in March, the court found that the encounter had been consensual. She was convicted of blackmail and perverting the course of justice, receiving five years for blackmail and three years for perverting justice, with one year to run concurrently, for a total of six years.
