Nigeria: A Nation At A Turning Point

Again and again, we call on Nigerians, to keep their tribal differences aside, for the sake of this country. 
We admonish every Nigerian, especially the Yorubas and the Igbos to come together and work to rescue our dear country. 

As I write this, there are 100,000 fulani fighters in the forests across the nation. ... Yes, 100,000 fighters, imported by the Sokoto Caliphate, led by the Sultan, to come and fight a conquest war against the Middle Belt. Yes, the Sultan knows this, he is a hypocrite, a murderer, and an agent of destabilization. 
Many of these fighters were imported and transported in Dangote trucks across the nation, waiting for signal to attack you and your loved ones. Do not act passively about this existential threat. You need to act and act decisively.

Again, I call on every Nigerian in the security architecture to Unite, and take appropriate action against the Fulani criminals and their leaders, especially the Sultan and other Fulani emirs who are bent on destabilizing our country. Anyone still listening to the Sultan is an idiot, a big idiot. That man (Sultan) is the one behind the agenda to take over Nigeria. The Sultan is the one leading the conquest war against our nation.

DSS, Police, and Immigrations have to investigate and identify the location of the fighters, arrest, jail and deport them, and failure to act makes you culpable in the ongoing bloodletting across the nation. Not only are you culpable, you are an accessory to murder and a failure to your ancestral nation. Please keep an eye on every Fulani personnel and STOP them from rising and holding high office.

> A group under the aegis of Plateau Regeneration Group has criticized Controversial social media personality, Martins Otse, aka VDM, over his recent allegations against Governor Caleb Mutfwang implying that the state Government prioritize cows over the lives of her citizens .

In a statement signed by Comrade Promise Yatu the newly elected Chairman of the group said it is very important to put the record straight on the clownery displayed via a podcast by one so-called social media vigilante, called very Dark Man .

The statement reads that " First, we want to appreciate all those who genuinely share in the burden and pains of the Plateau people. "

" We wish to commend all those who took the time to visit, send humanitarian aid, and all other acts of empathy, demonstrated at this crucial moment. "

We wish to appreciate the federal government also for making a u-turn on the erroneous narrative of a farmer herder clash and accepting the reality as mere genocide and nefarious land annexation by a terrorist jihadist sect. 

However, we wish to state in unambiguous terms that the podcast shared by one very Dahkman, implying that the state Government prioritize cows over the lives of her citizens is not just spurious, misleading or mischievous, it is the height of insensitivity, irresponsibility and absurdity for one to leverage upon to seek cheap attention. .

The statement also reads that " This so-called social media vigilante must understand that the people of plateau can not be easily hoodwinked by illogical and separatist narratives, which has the potency of creating more divide rather than uniting them.

We understand that he is a crisis merchant, and one who would want to use every given opportunity for personal aggrandizement, hence, we wish to state categorically that the only 'DISGRACE' we're seeing is his insolent and senseless acts, since he is apparently lazy to investigate before reacting to a social media hoax. 

For the records, and with all due respect to the mourning families and communities, the state Governor has not just demonstrated empathy by personally visiting and condoning with affected areas, but ensured that local securities were immediately empowered with the requisite resources to stay on guard against further invasions and escalations.

While the Governor in his recent Statewide broadcast and after deep consultations with critical stakeholders in the state, he announced a committee that would not just investigate but find solutions to the incessant killings of innocent Plateau people, the Governor has released resources, with clear instructions to the operation rainbow to collaborate with genuine vigilantes and other local community security outfits to ensure no community is left vulnerable for the assailants to attack, and so much more that is at the public domain. 

The Governor has demonstrated leadership, courage and resilience, and the people of plateau are proud of him, and would stand by him even as he leads at the front in this war against the Fulani militia, and it's either you're for us or against us.

The people of plateau remain peaceful and law abiding, and would welcome what ever form of help that would add to our advantage at the battle field but we must also state clearly that, the story of the Plateau people would be told by the Plateau people and not some desperate busybodies trying to cash out from our misfortune. 

We therefore call on the general public to disregard the sputum expectorated by the so-called very Darkman and whoever his sponsors are.

The trade war between China and the United States has taken a new dimension.

This time, China now faces tariffs of 245 percent on imports into the United States, "as a result of its retaliatory actions," the White House was quoted as saying.

This development also comes as President Donald Trump authorised an investigation into "national security risks posed by the US' reliance on imported, processed critical minerals and derived products," which includes cobalt, lithium, nickel, and rare-earth metals used in the manufacture of smartphones, batteries for electric vehicles, and military equipment.

Trump, meanwhile, has said China needs to make the first move in any negotiation. "The ball is in China's court. China needs to make a deal with us. We don't have to make a deal with them," the President said, a day after accusing Beijing of reneging on a major Boeing deal.

SaharaReporters earlier noted that, in response to the United States' earlier decision to impose a 145 percent tariff on Chinese goods, China has ordered its airlines not to take any further deliveries of Boeing jets. 

This is according to Bloomberg News on Tuesday, citing people familiar with the matter. 

Beijing has also instructed Chinese carriers to halt purchases of aircraft-related equipment and parts from U.S. companies, the Bloomberg report said. 

The Chinese government is reportedly considering ways to assist airlines leasing Boeing jets who are facing increased costs, sources told Bloomberg News. 

It would be recalled that U.S. President Donald Trump announced a new levy of 125 percent on goods from China. 

The White House later clarified that the rate is in addition to an existing 20 percent tariff, bringing the total to 145 percent.

The original 20 percent tariff had been imposed on imports of Chinese goods in response to what Trump described as Beijing’s role in the production and supply of fentanyl into the U.S. 

Earlier, in a statement published on its customs department website and seen by SaharaReporters, Chinese officials accused the United States of violating international trade norms. 

"On April 10, 2025, the US government announced that the 'reciprocal tariff' on Chinese goods exported to the US would be further increased to 125%. The US's imposition of abnormally high tariffs on China seriously violates international economic and trade rules, basic economic laws and common sense, and is completely a unilateral bullying and coercion." 

"In accordance with the Tariff Law of the People's Republic of China, the Customs Law of the People's Republic of China, the Foreign Trade Law of the People's Republic of China and other laws and regulations and the basic principles of international law, and with the approval of the State Council, starting from April 12, 2025, the tariff increase measures on imported goods originating from the United States will be adjusted." 

The Chinese resolution read as follows:

"Announcement of the State Council Tariff Commission on Adjusting the Tariff Measures on Imports Originating in the United States" (Tax Commission Announcement No. 5 of 2025): from 84% to 125%. Given that at the current tariff level, there is no market acceptance for US goods exported to China. If the US continues to impose tariffs on Chinese goods exported to the US, China will ignore it." 

"Other matters shall be implemented in accordance with the 'Announcement of the Tariff Commission of the State Council on the Imposition of Additional Tariffs on Imported Goods Originating in the United States' (Tax Commission Announcement No. 4 of 2025)," the statement read.

His Eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has said that traditional rulers are more concerned with the spate of killings and insecurity in Nigeria than the average politician in the country.

The sultan, who spoke at the Northern Traditional Ruler’s Council 7th Executive Committee Meeting in Maiduguri, on Tuesday, said they have come together as servants of the nation to discuss contentious security issues in a closed-door meeting.

“Our coming together as traditional rulers in the North, I believe we have more than 86 in the North. We will speak with one voice to say ‘enough is enough’ of this senseless killing of innocent people across the North and across the country.

“We have released so many statements of condemnations, but how many times do we need to condemn these killings before our political leaders and security agencies stop or reduce the insecurity in the country to the barest minimum?

“We, the traditional rulers, feel bad and saddened when our people are killed by people we don’t know. It’s high time we worked harder, talk to ourselves and in closed door meeting discuss it. The sultan, who expressed optimism that the insecurity in the North can be resolved, however, said that will be if the political leaders, traditional and religious leaders and citizens alike are sincere and willing to play their parts.

“As traditional rulers, we are not competing with governors of our states, we are only helping them. We will not and will never be in contention with political leadership or governors,” he said.

In the closed-door meeting, the sultan mentioned that they will discuss all the contentions of insecurity in the country and North in particular.

“Since we are here, we will discuss the happenings in Borno. We heard some comments that Boko Haram is returning, and I say Insha Allah (God willing) Almighty Allah will give us the strength and wherewithal to defeat them.

“Also, our coming here is to put a joint statement that we are all brothers to one another, and whatever we shall do, we must do to help our brothers out,” he said.

He called on the people in the region and the country as a whole to have trust in God, citing the insecurity happening around the world.

“Yes, there is insecurity in some parts of the Borno, but there is insecurity everywhere in the world not only in Nigeria.

“For some of us that have gone round the world will know, more people are being killed in some developed countries everyday than the total amount of people killed in Nigeria in one month or two months,” he said.

He, however, noted that killings are happening in different parts of the country and there is need for collective approach to stem the tide of the ‘endless’, merciless’ killings.

“What happened in Plateau yesterday, and within the week, over 100 people were killed. It’s very bad because people appear from somewhere, kill you and they are never arrested.

“Before them, people were killed in Sokoto on Sallah day, killed in Kebbi, as so many other places. If you put together the total number of people killed in the country in the last one month it is so high,” the sultan said.

He also advised people in the region and across the country to avoid profiling criminals or criminality to a particular tribe, religion or ethnicity, noting that in every tribe or religion, there are good and bad eggs. “So, let’s not look at some people and say they are the cause of our problems.”

The meeting, with theme “Enhanced Security As Panacea For Stability and Development of the North”, was declared open by the Vice President, Kashim Shettima, who was represented by Governor Babagana Umara Zulum.

Empower youths to curb radicalisation – Zulum 

Earlier in his remarks, Governor Zulum called on all stakeholders to focus on providing opportunities for the youth in Northern Nigeria. 

“Our youth population is large, energetic and eager to contribute, but many are without opportunities. This vacuum is dangerous. We must invest heavily in skills acquisition, vocational education, digital innovation and entrepreneurship. 

“Empowered youths are not only less vulnerable to crime or radicalisation, they become active agents of development,” he said.

Governor Zulum also stressed that agriculture has remained the economic lifeline for the North, hence deliberate effort is needed to enhance farming activities across the region.

Sustainable security can only be achieved through whole-of-society approach – IGP

Also speaking, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, said sustainable security can only be achieved through a whole of society approach, where security agencies, traditional rulers, government bodies and citizens work hand-in-hand for the common goal.

The IGP, represented by the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 15, Kenechikwu Onwuemelie, assured the royal highnesses of his unwavering dedication to continued partnerships and pledged the full support of the Nigeria Police Force in safeguarding communities and advancing the development of Northern Nigeria.

Borno at risk of returning to turmoil – Zulum 

Last week Tuesday, at the end of an expanded security council meeting with stakeholders in Maiduguri, Governor Zulum said the state is losing ground to Boko Haram terrorists due to renewed Boko Haram attacks.

He said the terrorists had so far dislodged military formations in Wulgo, Sabon Gari, Wajirko, Izge among others, stressing that the state is at risk of returning to turmoil.

Also, the Shehu of Borno, Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai Al Amin El-Kanemi, decried that three local government areas of the state are still under Boko Haram control.

The Shehu noted that the peace in the state is being compromised by settlers who came in disguise as those acquiring Islamic education and other businesses.

However, in a press statement, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, disagreed with Zulum’s claim, emphasising that the administration remains committed to combating terrorism and banditry across the nation.

He argued that the security agencies are working round-the-clock to bring the situation in parts of Borno State under control.

More alarms by Zulum 

On October 6, 2024, the governor raised grave concerns about the infiltration of Boko Haram insurgents into IDP camps, warning that the militants used these camps as hideouts after committing crimes. 

The governor made the revelation during the resettlement of 3,800 displaced persons in Konduga LGA.

In June 2023, he raised similar alarm over renewed attacks by the terrorists on farming communities within the state. Zulum spoke during a condolence visit to five communities in Jere and Mafa LGAs where eight farmers and scavengers were killed.

Before the murder of eight farmers in Shuwari, Kaleri, Tamsu Ngamdua, Baram Karamwa, and Muna communities, there had been similar attacks on farmers in Borno communities around Gwoza.

Similar visits by traditional rulers

It could be recalled that the Sultan of Sokoto had alongside other traditional rulers from the North and South, visited Borno on December 14, 2020, where they supported Governor Zulum’s comment, urging the military to take the fight to Lake Chad and rid the place from Boko Haram control.

At the meeting, the Sultan called on the Nigerian military to occupy the Lake Chad region and the Sambisa Forest. 

Timeline of killings in the North

On April 14th, 2025, no fewer than 40 people were killed in a midnight attack on Zike community in Bassa LGA of Plateau State.

On April 12, 2025, an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted by suspected Boko Haram insurgents killed eight passengers along Maiduguri – Damboa highway.

On 8th April, 2025, six other people were reportedly killed and about 59 others abducted in separate attacks across communities in Katsina State.

On April 7, 2025, the insurgents returned to Gwoza in large number and attempted to invade the town, but were repelled by troops, hunters and vigilantes.

On April 6, 2025, Boko Haram terrorists attacked a military location at Izge village, Gwoza LGA of Borno State, killing a captain and corporal, and carting away weapons. The attack, which was launched around 1am, also left many Boko Haram fighters dead.

On March 25, 2025, the insurgents also raided two military bases in Wajirko in Damboa and Wulgo in Gamboru Ngala local government areas of Borno State, reportedly killing some soldiers.

On January 11th, 2025, at least 21 government-backed fighters were killed in an ambush by bandits in Katsina State. Katsina police spokesman, Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu, said the convoy of the fighters was returning from paying condolences to the family of a dead colleague when it came under fire from bandits in the village of Baure, in the Safana district.

On December 24, 2024, the terrorists launched a drone attack on the Forward Operating Base in Damboa LGA and injured at least six soldiers.

On October 26, 2024, the terrorists attacked Chad army garrison bordering Borno State, killed over 40 soldiers and carted away weapons.

Nigeria has officially signed and submitted the Economic Community of West African States offer to establish zero duties on 90% of goods traded within Africa. The Minister of Industries, Trade and Investments, Dr Jumoke Oduwole, disclosed this on her X social media platform handle.

This milestone enables Nigerian exporters to leverage preferential tariff access across African markets, positioning Nigeria as a key player in regional and global trade.”

Speaking on the sidelines of the Conference of African Trade Ministers in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, Oduwole said, “As Nigeria commences its implementation review of five years of the AFCFTA, we have been reflective of the journey so far. What is clear is that Nigerian entrepreneurs are ready to take on the challenge to move across borders. We celebrate that feat and support them as a government with everything needed, including the tariff gazetting for our AFCFTA schedules.”

The Minister highlighted the AfCFTA as a vital opportunity for hardworking Nigerian entrepreneurs to export their goods and earn much-needed foreign exchange. She noted the agreement offers a pathway for business expansion while providing a platform for women-led and youth-led businesses, enabling them to trade with other Africans across the continent. She highlighted the 1.4 billion market and $3.4 trillion regional economy as the largest free zone in the world, the African Continental Free Trade Area.

Nigeria’s Trade Minister also reaffirmed the country’s commitment to taking lead in the digital trade framework. She stated that Nigeria will remain competitive in trading services and goods while describing the AfCFTA as a partnership designed to deliver shared benefit across the continent.

Nigeria is now the 23rd AfCFTA State Party to gazette its Provisional Schedule of Tariff Concessions, PSTCs.This move will provide clarity and certainty, confirming that Nigeria will offer preferential tariff treatment to eligible goods imported into the country, in line with its commitments under the AfCFTA Agreement.

The Imo State Police Command has announced the arrest of three suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra following a raid on an alleged terror hideout located on Cameron Street, Ubahu, in the Okigwe Local Government Area of the state.

The raid, which took place in the early hours of Thursday, April 17, 2025, was carried out by the command’s tactical teams in collaboration with local vigilante groups, acting on credible intelligence.

The operation led to a gun battle, during which two suspects reportedly fled into the surrounding bushes, while three others were captured.

The arrested suspects were identified as: Onyekaba Ikenna Innocent (21), Ugwu Ikenna (31) and Ofor Kasarachi (37) The announcement of this operation and the subsequent arrests was made by the Imo State Police Command, underscoring their commitment to tackling suspected criminal elements within the state.

The successful raid marks a notable step in the ongoing efforts to maintain law and order and address security concerns in the Okigwe Local Government Area and the wider Imo State. Further details regarding the investigation and any recovered items are expected to be disclosed by the police command.

Spokesperson of the Imo State Police Command, Henry Okoye, disclosed the development while parading the suspects and recovered items at the command’s headquarters in Owerri on Friday.

According to Okoye, the operation led to the recovery of significant weapons and materials allegedly linked to terrorist activities.

Items recovered include: One AK-47 rifle, Two pump-action shotguns, Eighteen live cartridges, Multiple mobile devices and laptops, ₦10.3 million in cash.

“The recovered cash, based on preliminary investigations, is believed to have been contributed by IPOB members to finance acts of terrorism,” Okoye stated.

He added that the command, under the leadership of Commissioner of Police CP Aboki Danjuma, remains committed to sustaining the ongoing crackdown on criminal elements threatening public safety in Imo State.

As the Easter season approaches, Okoye assured residents that the command has intensified patrols, surveillance, and checkpoints in coordination with other security agencies to ensure a safe and peaceful celebration.

The singer explained that he was convinced to dabble into the scheme after some of his band members confirmed making money from it.

“Lateef said he used N200k to collect N600k. That was what pushed me. I withdrew the money I had saved with insurance and invested it on April 1, but everything vanished,” he added.

Taye Currency said he decided to talk about his ordeal to avoid developing high blood pressure over his loss.

> Former Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Dr. Abubakar Chika Malami, has strongly refuted claims made by associates of Senator Tanko Al-Makura that the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) bloc has endorsed President Bola Tinubu’s administration and ruled out defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking through his media aide, Muhammed Bello Doka, Malami emphasized that only loyalists of the CPC political ideology, founded under former President Muhammadu Buhari, have the legitimacy to speak on the bloc’s current position.

“When you talk about the CPC bloc, one must ask — who are you referring to? Is it individuals like Senator Tanko Al-Makura, Adamu Adamu, Aminu Bello Masari, and Farouk Adamu Aliyu — the same people who have, in recent times, thrown Buhari under the bus in their desperate quest for political relevance?” Doka questioned.

He asserted that any pronouncement by the group is purely personal and self-serving, bearing no official connection to the CPC bloc.

“Their statement is not reflective of the CPC base; it is a strategic attempt to remain politically relevant within a party structure that they never genuinely owned,” he added.

Malami Reacts to Defection Rumours

Addressing the rumours of Malami’s alleged defection to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Doka described such claims as "figments of imagination", insisting that Malami remains a member of the APC.

“Dr. Malami is a notable political figure in Nigeria and would not defect secretly. He is still within the APC, although he is in ongoing consultations across several political platforms,” Doka clarified.

He stated that until consultations are concluded, any talk of defection or political declaration is premature.

“He remains very active in politics and, at the appropriate time, will communicate his next steps. He retains every constitutional right to associate with any political party or to contest for any position in Kebbi State or nationally,” the statement concluded.
