Atiku Urges Tinubu to Suspend Works Minister Umahi Pending Probe into Mary Habila’s Death

Atiku Urges Tinubu to Suspend Works Minister Umahi Pending Probe into Mary Habila’s Death

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has urged President Bola Tinubu to direct Works Minister David Umahi to step aside pending the outcome of investigations into the death of 26-year-old Mary Habila at the minister’s private residence in Ebonyi State. Atiku stressed that his call is not a declaration of guilt but a necessary step to ensure public confidence in a credible, independent, and transparent inquiry. He criticised the slow response from the federal government, noting the absence of an autopsy and limited public communication. He urged the Inspector-General of Police to transfer the case to Force Headquarters with independent forensic experts and demanded a full autopsy with public findings. Atiku emphasised that no official under such a cloud should continue in office as usual. He also called for protection of Habila’s family from pressure or intimidation and full access to investigation results.

Authorities should outline a clear timeline for the probe and consider interim measures that protect both the investigation's integrity and public trust.
