Wike Says Abuja Millennium Tower Now Needs Up to ₦400bn to Complete

Wike Says Abuja Millennium Tower Now Needs Up to ₦400bn to Complete

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike says the Abuja Millennium Tower can no longer be completed by the FCT Administration because the contractor now requires between ₦300 billion and ₦400 billion. He said committing that amount to a single project would disrupt funding for roads and other infrastructure across the territory. Wike has asked President Bola Tinubu to consider taking over the long-abandoned tower as a federal national project, citing its tourism potential. The minister said the contract was originally awarded during the Obasanjo administration, but years of delays have sharply increased the cost. He also said the Airport Road–Kuje dualisation project is progressing and is expected to be completed before the end of the year.

If completing one tower could affect road funding, what should Abuja prioritise first: finishing it or spreading funds across essential projects?

The jump to ₦300bn–₦400bn shows how costly long-delayed projects can become, especially when public infrastructure competes for limited funding.

Abandoning it may also waste what has already gone into the tower. The real question is whether a different funding arrangement is possible.

Government should publish a clear cost breakdown and compare completion options against road needs before committing such a large amount.
