Owerri Airport to Close for 25 Days From October 20 for Runway Repairs
Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, will close for at least 25 days from October 20, 2026, for runway repairs and extension works. The project will repair damaged pavement, surface cracks and potholes. It will also extend the runway to improve capacity and potentially accommodate larger aircraft, subject to regulatory approval. The Federal Government said the closure is necessary to protect aviation safety and prepare the airport for increased Christmas travel to the South-East. Passengers with flights scheduled during the shutdown should contact their airlines for cancellations, rescheduling or alternative travel arrangements.
