Women’s Centre Gets First Wheelchair Ramp 34 Years After Opening
The Maryam Babangida National Centre for Women Development in Abuja has installed its first wheelchair-accessibility ramp, 34 years after the centre was established. Director-General Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi said the ramp was provided free by Julius Berger after an accessibility audit with the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities. She said a board member, Lois Auta, had previously needed to be carried upstairs by five men to attend a meeting. Auta was able to wheel into the building independently for the first time this week. The centre also plans to redesign an unsafe auditorium ramp, upgrade assistive technology and expand disability-inclusive empowerment, research, AI and ICT programmes through its zonal offices.
