AE-FUNAI Researchers Win £20,000 Grant to Preserve Akwete Weaving Heritage
Researchers at Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike, have received a £20,000 grant from the British Museum’s Endangered Material Knowledge Programme for a project on Akwete cloth weaving in Abia State. The 2025–2026 project will document and digitally archive the multi-heddle weaving methods, cultural symbols and indigenous knowledge of the Akwete Ndoki people. It aims to help preserve the endangered craft for future generations and research. The university says the project was selected for its methodology, multidisciplinary team and the urgency of safeguarding the Ahia-Akwete weaving tradition. The team includes researchers from AE-FUNAI and Pan-Atlantic University.
