Why Oyo’s Oriire Rescue Succeeded While Northern Abductions Drag On

The Arewa Consultative Forum and Northern Elders Forum have urged President Tinubu to replicate the Oriire rescue in the North. No Nigerian child should languish in captivity. In Oyo State, relentless pressure from the governor, media and Yoruba community kept the ordeal in the spotlight. In Borno and Kwara, silence, fatalism and political indifference have let many abductees remain forgotten in the forest. We must ask why Oriire provoked national outrage while Chibok-style kidnappings in the North draw little public emotion. Communities must refuse to normalise evil and demand united action against banditry and terrorism. We mourn the lives lost during those 56 days and celebrate the return of 44 pupils and teachers. This victory shows that collective outrage and sustained effort can bring captives home. It’s time for the North to have its Oriire moment.
