Sultan to Religious Leaders: Stolen Money Cannot Earn Divine Acceptance Through Pilgrimage

The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Saad Abubakar, has urged Nigerian religious leaders to take a firm stand against corruption and support efforts to prosecute financial crimes. Speaking at the 2026 Nigeria Inter-Religious Council meeting, he said money stolen from public or private funds cannot become acceptable simply because it is used to sponsor Hajj, Jerusalem pilgrimages or other religious activities. The Sultan said pastors, imams, relatives and friends accused of corruption should face the law without religious or political interference. He urged the EFCC to investigate and prosecute suspects based on the law, regardless of their faith or connections.
