South African Sports Minister Gives SAFA 21 Days to Account for R13m VAR Funds
South Africa’s Sports Minister, Gayton McKenzie, says the South African Football Association has been given 21 days to explain how R13 million allocated for Video Assistant Referee technology was used. McKenzie said he requested the return of the public funds after becoming frustrated by the lack of progress in introducing VAR to the country’s Premier Soccer League. The demand follows repeated refereeing controversies and growing calls for the technology. According to the minister, his department funded fact-finding visits to Spain and the United Kingdom before releasing the money to SAFA. He says he remains committed to getting VAR introduced, even if further support is needed outside the association.
