Has Student-Loan Funding Helped Keep ASUU Off Strike and Improve University Rankings?

Nigerian public universities appear to be experiencing fewer ASUU strikes while gaining more visibility in global university rankings. One possible reason is the growing role of internally generated revenue, especially tuition-related income supported by student loans. Rather than funding universities entirely through direct allocations, the Federal Government now provides loans to eligible students. When academic calendars remain stable, universities can retain a more predictable flow of fees and other internally generated revenue. For a large institution such as the University of Ibadan, prolonged strikes could mean substantial revenue losses over several academic sessions. To improve further, public universities should publish key data, including enrolment figures, internally generated revenue and research grants. They should also market their research capacity to the private sector and agree on a fair revenue-sharing structure with their proprietors so that both the institutions and their owners can invest in growth.
