FG Orders Hospitals to Strengthen Protection for Health Workers After Rising Attacks
The Federal Government has ordered federal tertiary hospitals to immediately introduce stronger measures to protect health workers from harassment, intimidation and physical attacks. The directive followed a ministerial committee report triggered by a confrontation involving EFCC operatives and staff of the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital. The committee recorded 18 assault, intimidation or harassment cases in federal tertiary hospitals within the past year, involving patients, relatives, members of the public and security personnel. Hospitals must now strengthen access control and surveillance, improve visitor identification, secure sensitive units, and establish Violence Prevention Teams. They are also expected to document incidents promptly, support affected staff and appoint liaison officers to work with law enforcement without disrupting patient care. The government says offenders can be investigated and prosecuted under existing laws, while broader proposals for a nationwide safety framework will be considered by the National Council on Health.
