Ty Cobb’s Unmatched Baseball Legacy: Life, Records and Net Worth
Ty Cobb, known as “the Georgia Peach,” was born on December 18, 1886 in Narrows, Georgia. He played 24 seasons in Major League Baseball, including 22 years with the Detroit Tigers and finished his career with the Philadelphia Athletics. In 1936, he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame with 98.2% of the vote. Cobb set 90 MLB records. He won 12 batting titles and hit.300 or better in 23 straight seasons. He batted.400 three times and stole home 54 times. His combined total of 4,065 runs scored and runs batted in remains the highest ever by a major league player. Off the field, Cobb grew up on a Georgia farm. His father served as a state senator. In 1905, his mother was tried and later acquitted for defending herself after shooting Cobb’s father. He joined the Freemasons and lived in Detroit’s historic Woodbridge neighborhood. Cobb retired in 1928 and died on July 17, 1961 at age 74. He built an estate worth over $11 million at his death (equivalent to more than $127 million today) through smart investments in Coca-Cola and General Motors. He left much of his wealth to family and an educational fund that has awarded over $19 million in scholarships to Georgia students.
