Niger Delta Leader Demands Probe of Warri-Itakpe Rail Repairs After Deadly Agbor Derailment
A Niger Delta ex-agitator leader has accused the Federal Ministry of Transportation of endangering passengers by allegedly repairing damaged rail infrastructure and coaches after the June 8, 2026 derailment near Agbor, Delta State. The Nigerian Railway Corporation said four people died and 64 others were injured when the Warri-Itakpe train derailed near the Goodluck Jonathan Railway Terminal in Owa-Oyibu. Its preliminary report cited a possible wheel or bogie defect and said there was no evidence of vandalism. The leader called for an investigation into the repairs and urged the Federal Government, as well as the governors of Delta, Edo and Kogi states, to inspect the rail line. He warned that passengers need safe trains, especially given the poor state of major roads in the region.
