Nigerian Catholic Priests Question Viral Vatican Skull Display and Saint Devotions
Two Nigerian Catholic priests have reacted to a viral video showing a Catholic bishop displaying what is said to be the skull of Saint Agatha at the Vatican. One priest criticised what he described as excessive devotion to saints, including the use of numerous images and relics. He argued that Catholic worship should remain centred on Christ, the crucifix and the tabernacle, warning against practices that could appear idolatrous. The other priest said relics are meant to serve as reminders of saints whose lives reflected Christian faith, not objects of worship. However, he acknowledged that the viral display could seem psychologically and culturally uncomfortable. The reactions have revived debate over relics, veneration and the boundaries between Catholic tradition and idolatry.
