Sanwo-Olu and Umahi Debunk Coastal Highway-Flood Link in Lagos

Sanwo-Olu and Umahi Debunk Coastal Highway-Flood Link in Lagos — 1 of 2
1 / 2

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Works Minister David Umahi have denied that the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway worsened flooding in the state. Umahi said President Bola Tinubu ordered an inspection after social media rumours. He explained that the highway is elevated to withstand ocean surges and protect the corridor for decades. He also praised the Lagos drainage master plan and promised joint federal-state work on drainage and service lanes. Sanwo-Olu stressed that Lagos’s coastal geography makes seasonal flooding inevitable. He urged residents to avoid indiscriminate waste disposal, enforce environmental regulations and support new maintenance measures, including mechanised street sweepers. He described the coastal highway as a transformative investment for economic growth and improved quality of life.

The government should publish the full inspection report so citizens can assess flood impact data and plan accordingly.
