Reps Amend Electoral Act: Two-Year Jail or N10m Fine for Dual Party Membership
On Wednesday, the House of Representatives approved amendments to Section 77 of the Electoral Act 2026. The change inserts three new clauses to curb dual membership in political parties. Clause 8 bans anyone from being registered with more than one party at the same time. Clause 9 voids any dual membership and strips the person of valid party status until they regularise their membership. Clause 10 makes knowingly holding memberships in two parties an offence punishable by up to two years in jail, a N10 million fine, or both.
