Donald Duke: Nigerians Were Better Off Under Military Rule Than Civilian Government
Former Cross River State governor Donald Duke has argued that Nigerians were better off under military rule because governance was less expensive and public welfare has not improved enough since the return to democracy in 1999. Duke said the country still faces worsening problems in education, healthcare, infrastructure, electrification and unemployment. He questioned whether Nigerians are truly better off today than they were at the beginning of the Fourth Republic. He also criticised weak opposition parties, disputed elections and the lack of effective checks on executive power. According to him, public distrust in the electoral system has weakened accountability and widened the gap between the rich and poor.
