NISO Blames Transmission Line Failures for Power Cuts in Lagos, Abuja and the North
The Nigerian Independent System Operator says recent reductions in electricity supplied to Lagos, Abuja and northern states were caused by transmission-line outages, not a shortage of power generation. The operator said faults on key 330kV lines reduced the amount of electricity that could be safely transmitted to affected areas. This led to temporary cuts in allocations to DisCos serving Lagos, Abuja, Kano, Kaduna, Jos, Yola and other locations. NISO said several lines serving Lagos were unavailable, while simultaneous trips on transmission routes in the North further constrained supply. It added that the affected Abuja lines were restored on August 29. According to the operator, available generation cannot reach consumers without adequate transmission capacity. It said allocations may be reduced or redistributed to keep the national grid stable and prevent a wider system disturbance.
